USGA releases qualifying sites for 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2

Last year, the USGA received a record number of entries for the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, with 10,187 hopefuls. The previous record: 10,127 entries for the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. With the venerable layout hosting the national championship for the fourth time this year, odds are good that the record may be challenged once again.

On Monday, the USGA announced the host courses for the U.S. Open’s local and sectional qualifiers. The local qualifiers will take place at 109 sites in 44 U.S. states and Canada from April 22-May 20, where competitors will play 18 holes. Those who advance to final qualifying (sectionals) will play 36 holes at one of 13 global sites: England, Japan, Canada, or 10 in the U.S. Final qualifying will take place on May 20th or June 3rd, depending on the site.

Tiger Woods says the USGA’s golf-ball rollback is right. And wrong

Think you have what it takes to qualify for the U.S. Open? Online player registration for the 2024 U.S. Open will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at champs.usga.org and will continue through Wednesday, April 10. There’s just one caveat: To be eligible, a player must have a handicap index not exceeding 0.4, or be a professional.

While winning the U.S. Open as a qualifier may seem pretty unlikely, there is historical precedent: Ken Venturi’s road to U.S. Open glory began with a local qualifier in 1964, as did Orville Moody’s in 1969. And many others have lifted the trophy after advancing through sectionals; most recently, Lucas Glover in 2009.
