While Valhalla Golf Club made headlines for low scoring, not everyone is deep in red numbers.
With the PGA Championship near the halfway point, it appears that plenty of big stars will be heading home early.
Each major has different rules for making the cut, and at the PGA Championship, the top 70 players and ties continue on to play the weekend.
With the second round still in progress and likely to finish early on Saturday morning, the current cut stands at one under par, meaning anyone who finishes 36 holes with a score higher than one under will be sent home.
Who’s in jeopardy of missing the weekend of play?
Tiger Woods is the biggest star currently on the chopping block. While other players capitalized on Thursday’s soft Round 1 conditions, Woods posted a round of one-over 72. He needed to rally in a big way on Friday, and unfortunately things only got worse. Midway through his second round, Woods’ prospects of sticking around Valhalla look grim, as he’s at six over par.
Other players currently in danger:
Adam Scott (+4). Like Woods, Scott needed a better start on Thursday, but fired an opening round of one over. A four-over 39 on the front nine on Friday didn’t help matters. Scott didn’t post a birdie until his 10th hole of the day, and he’ll need a lot more to get on the right side of the cut line.
Wyndham Clark (+4). The reigning U.S. Open champ fired rounds of 71-75 to end his chances of adding a second major to his resume this week.
Phil Mickelson (+4). After rounds of 72-74, the six-time major champ won’t bag No. 7 at Valhalla.
Dustin Johnson (+2). Johnson posted an opening-round 73 on Thursday, and needs to light it up on his back nine on Friday to have a chance to play the weekend.
Jon Rahm (E) and Matt Fitzpatrick (E). Rounds of 70-72 and 69-73, respectively, have Rahm and Fitzpatrick right on the cusp of the cutline. They’ll need the field’s help in order to stick around.
