Memorial Tournament final round preview
It looked like Scottie Scheffler might finally be showing signs of humanity when he triple-bogeyed the par-4 9th hole on Saturday, eradicating what had been a three-shot lead to start the third round.
But in true Scheffler fashion, he rebounded, posting three birdies on the back nine to sign for a round of one-under 71, bringing him to 10 under overall and four shots clear of his closest competitors, Collin Morikawa, Sepp Straka and Adam Hadwin, who are six under.
While a tournament win is never a forgone conclusion for the leader, Scheffler’s chasers aren’t holding out hope for a collapse from the leader.
“If Scottie does what Scottie does, it’s hard to beat him,” Straka said after his third-round 68. “But honestly, if anything, it might make it a little bit easier, especially on a Saturday, because you’re not really worried about putting yourself up there ahead of him or, I don’t know, it just makes it a little bit more comforting that if he’s playing his game there’s not really much I can do.”
As for Scheffler, his plan is to simply keep on keeping on.
“I’m going to go out tomorrow and try and have a good round of golf, keep my head down and stay in my own little world out there,” he said. “I’m not going to really pay any attention to what anybody else is doing out there, I’m just going to try and do my best.”
Not only does Sunday’s winner earn a handshake with Jack Nicklaus, there’s a sizeable check for the victor, too.
The winner of the Memorial Tournament will go home with a $4 million payday, with each of the top-four finishers earning seven figures.
