Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup partners. Practice-round partners. Wine Country enjoyers. Buds.

The Patrick CantlayXander Schauffele friendship is a good one. Which makes Sunday’s final pairing at the Genesis Invitational a good one.

At Riviera, starting at 2:!5 p.m. they’ll be playing partners. Cantlay is the 54-hole leader, with a 14-under total, and Schauffele is two back.

Xander, your thoughts?

“it’s a pretty comfortable pairing for us,” he said. “We play a lot week in and week out, and we both love to compete. There’s nothing more than we like to do is compete in big events. We’ve done it a few times in the past and taken shots at each other, it’s something we talk about and something we want to keep doing.”

Patrick, your thoughts?

“We’ve had a few final rounds together, so should be a comfortable pairing,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Xander, are you aware of your head-to-head record?

“Yeah, we’ve played in the final pairing a couple times,” he said. “I got the best of him at Travelers; he got the best of me at BMW. We know where we stand and how we compete against each other.”

Any idea how often you guys have played together, be it a practice or tournament round?

“Yeah, we don’t get paired much,” Schauffele said. “We joked about how we never really start Thursday, Friday off together very often, probably because we play Mondays and Tuesdays very often as well.

“A ton.”

Would you put it at dozens or hundreds?

“I mean, I’m not sure,” Schauffele said. “There’s an easy way to go about it. My eighth year on Tour, I don’t know what number it is for him, but for the last three to five years, it feels like we’ve played a few Monday, Tuesday games.”
