The 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii, the first full-field event of the new year, begins on Thursday, and according to the Sony Open betting odds via BetMGM, Jordan Spieth is among the favorites, but another player leads the way. Here’s what you need to know.
Sony Open odds: This week’s favorites
Jordan Spieth hasn’t played the Sony Open in Hawaii since 2019, and that was amidst a lost year of struggles on the course. He missed the cut in that start, but this year we’re dealing with a different Spieth than we saw in 2019.
The three-time major champion has returned to his winning ways of late, capturing wins at the 2021 Valero Texas Open and the 2022 RBC Heritage. For his efforts, the oddsmakers are giving Spieth +1600 odds-to-win this week’s Sony, ranking third best.
Leading the way in the oddsmakers eyes is young phenom Tom Kim, the 20-year-old pro who burst on the scene last year with two victories and a starring performance on the International team at the Presidents Cup. Kim’s odds-to-win sit at +1200, with Sungjae Im taking the second spot at +1400.
Sony Open odds: Long shot of the week
Our long shot for this week is a player who is bound to end up in the winner’s circle one day soon. At 29, Kurt Kitayama isn’t as young as some other up-and-comers on Tour, but his talent is as promising as anyone’s.
Kitayama won two DP World Tour events before earning his PGA Tour card in late 2021. Though he didn’t win in his first year on Tour, he came close a number of times, including a 3rd-place finish at the Honda Classic, and runner-up finishes at the Mexico Open and Genesis Scottish Open.
In his third start of the current PGA Tour season in October, Kitayama added another second at the CJ Cup. If his game this week looks anything like it did last year, he’s definitely a threat to win. And with long odds of +5000, Kitayama is a great value bet. With a win, he could turn a $100 bet into $5,000.
