How different has this Masters been from the one played just five short months ago?
Dustin Johnson, on his way to winning the green jacket last November, made just four bogeys the entire tournament, never shot a round over par and set the tournament scoring record, with a 20-under total.
On Friday, Johnson spent his afternoon flirting with the weekend cut line, and he’d ultimately miss it.
Johnson was one of several notable players to miss the chance to play rounds three and four at Augusta National. The Masters sets its cut line at the players who are tied for 50 and better — it no longer also takes those who are within 10 shots of the lead, an adjustment made last year — and that number this year is three over.
Among the 34 players who did not make the cut:
Johnson (five over). He was two over after 14 holes on Friday, then he bogeyed 15, after hitting his second shot into the water; 16, after three-putting; and 18, after hitting his tee shot into the water.
Sergio Garcia (four over): The 2017 champ shot even-par 72 on Friday, but couldn’t recover from an opening 76.
Brooks Koepka (five over): Koepka, playing just weeks after surgery on his right knee, shot rounds of 74 and 75.
Lee Westwood (five over): Westwood, who played in the final pairing in back-to-back weeks last month, could not overcome an opening 78.
Rory McIlroy (six over): McIlroy’s search for the career grand slam will continue. He shot rounds of 76 and 74.
Patrick Cantlay (eight over): One of the tournament pre-favorites was doomed by a first-round 79.
Sungjae Im (13 over): Last November, Im tied for second. This week, Im shot rounds of 77 and 80.
Matthew Wolff: Wolff was disqualified for returning a scorecard with a score lower than he made on the 17th hole. He had shot rounds of 76 and 79 and would have missed the cut anyway.
Among the players who just made the cut were three-time Masters champ Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott, the 2013 champ, who finished on the cut number; and Jose Maria Olazabal, the 55-year-old two-time green jacket winner who finished at two over.
