It’s Sunday at TPC Summerlin for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, Nev. A few big names are lurking near the top of the biggest field since the U.S. Open, and in true Vegas form, somebody is going to leave Sunday the big winner. Patrick Cantlay and Martin Laird are tied for the lead heading into Sunday at TPC Summerlin after a pair of Saturday 65s. For Cantlay, a leaderboard deadlock on Sunday at the Shriners is well-worn territory. In 2017, his first professional victory came when his par on the 74th hole bested Alex Cejka and Whee Kim in a playoff. Last year, the 74th hole proved to be Cantlay’s undoing, as Kevin Na captured the sudden-death playoff and the Shriners win.
This year, Cantlay looks to lock up the lead well before a playoff, but he’ll be battling one of golf’s youngest stars to do so. Matthew Wolff launched himself into contention with a Saturday 61, and is once again lurking near the top of the leaderboard. Will his affinity for late-round heroics match his affinity for eagles during yesterday’s round (he had three during a five-hole stretch)? Or will he fall victim to a late charge from Cantlay, Na or even Bryson DeChambeau?
