2019 U.S. Open Live Coverage: Highlights from Friday’s second round at Pebble Beach

After an exciting opening day at the 2019 U.S. Open, the players are set to begin the second round. You can follow the entire U.S. Open second round with our U.S. Open Live Coverage blog below, featuring live score updates, highlights from your favorite players, and video clips of the best shots.

The group to watch on Friday morning is undoubtedly the trio of Justin Rose, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth. Rose tied Tiger’s record for the lowest Pebble Open round ever on Thursday to take a one-shot lead. Woods, meanwhile, battled back from an early double bogey to shoot a one-under 70. That group began the second round at 11:24 a.m. ET.

10:30: That’s gonna do it for the second round of the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. We’re set up for an amazing weekend of golf with a stacked leaderboard. We’ll be back right here tomorrow for the third round!

10:24: Folks, we finally have the highlight of the round courtesy of Patrick Reed. Enjoy!

10:09: Gary Woodland closes out his second round with a statement! He shoots a six-under 65 on Friday without a single bogey. He’s now ahead by two shots heading into the weekend at nine-under.

9:49: Oosthuizen bogeys the 16th hole to drop back to five-under for the tournament. Meanwhile, Woodland continues his bogey-free round and maintains the lead at eight-under after a solid par save at the eighth hole.

9:35: Now back-to-back birdies for Louis to move back to six-under for the tournament. He’s back to two shots off the lead.

9:28: Rory is done for the day. He pars the 18th hole to head into the clubhouse at five-under and three shots off the lead. He’s right in the mix at Pebble. Rahm birdies the 18th hole to move to three-under and five shots off the lead heading into the weekend.

9:24: And we have a new leader in Gary Woodland. He birdies the sixth hole to move to eight-under for the tournament.

9:21: Louie bounces back with a birdie to move back to five-under and two shots off the lead.

9:01: Phil has to settle for bogey at the 15th as he drops to two-under overall and five shots back.

8:59: Another bogey for Louie, as he now drops to four-under overall. It’s been a brutal back nine for him thus far.

8:58: Gary Woodland is now tied for the lead with four to play! He’s with Justin Rose at seven-under after a birdie at the fifth hole.

8:55: Phil has six birdies today and is now three-under for the tournament. Lefty is only four shots off the lead!

8:49: Back-to-back birdies for Rory to bring him back to five-under. He’s had a rollercoaster last few holes!

8:42: And now back to back bogeys for Louie! He’s now dropped to five-under after a bogey at the 12th.

8:41: Oosthuizen bogeys the 11th hole to fall back to six-under and into a tie with Woodland for second.

8:40: Can Rickie Fowler turn things around? Well, this might be a good start.

8:35: Rory’s back in the birdie column! He birdies the 15th hole to move back to four-under and three shots off the lead.

8:26: Another birdie for Phil at the 13th hole! He’s hanging around here at Pebble and won’t go away at two-under.

8:18: After a bogey at the 13th, Rory double bogeys the 14th hole and plummets to three-under and four shots off the lead.

8:15: A bogey at the 13th hole drops to Rory back to five-under. Gary Woodland in sole possession of second place now.

7:55: Gary Woodland birdies the first hole to move to six-under and one shot off the lead alongside Rory. Speaking of . Rory, he had an excellent par save at the 12th hole.

7:47: Phil birdies the par-4 10th hole to move back to two-under. So much for the seagull!

7:43: A seagull tried to steal Phil Mickelson’s ball on the 10th fairway!

7:34: Another birdie for Rory and he’s now one shot off the lead after 11 holes today. He’s now six-under!

7:26: After a strong Thursday, Rickie Fowler is struggling on Friday. He started the day five-under, and after nine holes, he’s now two-under as he makes the turn.

7:22: Nice hole out here for JT. Maybe those pants are working!

7:17: And Justin Rose has company at the top of the leaderboard! Louis Oosthuizen makes his third birdie of the day to move to seven-under overall.

7:12: Amateur Brandon Wu from Stanford is playing so well at Pebble Beach. He’s tied for 12th and currently three-under!

7:06: Sergio Garcia joins the party with a birdie to move to four-under overall!

7:02: The 2010 winner of the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, Graeme McDowell, is charging up the leaderboard! He’s made four straight birdies to move to four-under overall and three shots back.

6:43: Here comes Phil! Lefty chips in on the sixth hole for his third birdie of the day, he’s now at two-under and fully in the mix.

6:36: Here’s that Rory shot I was telling you about earlier. The ensuing birdie put him just two back. Let’s gooooo.

6:20: Phil’s playing pretty well today, two-under on his first five means he looks pretty safe to make the cut — and potentially in position to run up the leaderboard.

6:15: Jon Rahm hits a pretty strange shot on the short par-3 7th hole. Rahm, who’s struggled with a bogey-par-bogey-par-par-bogey start, hits a wedge that lands in the rough in the front of the green, then kicks forward and rolls all the way to about seven feet away. He knocks in the putt for his first birdie of the day.

6:00: Spieth speaks for the first time following the bizarre rake incident on the second hole of the day:

“That’s on me. I just got to look at all options ahead of me. And if there’s rakes in front of the bunker, typically we pull them out. But when I was in it, I couldn’t see it. So it was kind of a weird set of events.”

5:46: Louis Oosthuizen, whose got of a bit of the Koepka gene about him when it comes to playing well in majors and nowhere else, is alone in second place after a birdie on the opening hole.

5:37: Course looks like it might be playing a little more difficult in the afternoon. Not overly so, but there’s been a lot of pars from the leaders to start the day. Rickie stars with four straight, Piercy pars seven of his first eight holes.

5:30: A hole later, Rory gets his first birdie of the day on the board. He’s at four-under and T-7

5:18: Rory’s drive on the third hole looks like it took off way left. Crowd starts grumbling. Turns out, that’s where he was aiming. Ended in the center of the fairway, but he still only managed a par.

5:12: Just got out of the Justin Rose Press Conference. Lots of interesting stuff from the current clubhouse leader. He said his short game is the reason why he finished 7-under after 36 holes, while also admitting that his ball striking isn’t quite where he wants it to be — but that he ok with it.

“Sometimes when your game is right where you want it to be, it’s hard to keep it there. It’s actually kind of to be scoring well and focusing the things you need to do to improve.”

5:08: Alright party people, Josh is tagging out, it’s Luke Kerr-Dineen here tagging in on the live blog. Let’s get crazy.

4:59. Dustin Johnson opens his round on the 1st hole; he’s even starting the day and finds the fairway. Mickelson (one over) also find the fairway on the 1st.

4:55. Cleaning up some notes from the early wave, Stenson (71) and Scott (69) are both three under and four back of Rose. This is a nice course for those two… if they can make some putts.

4:52. Rory pars the first and then crushes his driver on the second. Finds the fairway.

4:46. Rickie, Rory, Day among those in the afternoon wave now going off. Be interesting to see who jumps up and catches Rose in the next few hours… if anyone.

4:42. Kuchar makes a long birdie putt on 18 and he shoots 69 and is four under, three back. Hadley shoots 70 and he’s in that four under group as well.

4:38. Scott Piercy is in the afternoon wave and already off to a good start. He birdies the 13th hole (started with three straight pars) and is five under and in a big group tied for second.

4:33. Spieth makes bogey on the last and that’s a two-under 69. He’s one under after 36 holes, six behind Rose.

4:29. From 6 feet, 10 inches, Tiger misses on the low side and that’s a bogey to end his day. He shoots a one-over 72 after making bogey on the last two. He’s now even for the tournament and seven behind Rose.

4:28. Rose two putts from the fringe to fire a one-under 70 and stay up top at seven under. A group of four (three of whom have yet to start) are at five under.

4:26. Spieth missed the green left and had a tough chip that he ran about 10 feet by the hole. Tricky par coming back for him.

4:24. Tiger has 54 yards to the hole and has to go over a bunker and won’t be able to stop this, but he hits a spectacular shot and has about six or seven feet for par. That was great.

4:17. Tiger pulls it from the rough although this never had a chance of reaching the green. He’s gonna have another tough up and down to close out his day.

4:12. Spieth, Rose and Tiger close with the 526-yard par-5 9th. It’s the hardest hole this week — of course it is that’s a long par 4! Spieth and Rose find the fairway while Tiger hits it in the left fairway bunker.

4:10. Rose had the closest par putt of the bunch and knocked it in. Lead stays at two. This group has one left to play in the par-4 9th.

4:09. Tiger can’t make his par putt but Spieth drains his. Good save and he remains two under.

4:07. Tiger misses his par putt and that’s a bogey. Tough day for him. Just can’t get anything going yet still, at one under, is in this thing for now.

4:05. Tiger stabs at his ball deep in the rough and knocks it past the pin. Will have a fast 12-footer to save par. Spieth runs it by the hole and will have about 8 feet for his par. Rose up next….

4.01. Not the best approaches for this group on 8. Tiger and Rose come up short and will have tricky up and downs while Spieth goes long.

3:59. You know who is looking pretty good right now? Rickie (five under), Xander (five under), Rory (three under) and others, who have yet to start their rounds but haven’t seen the field pull away from them this morning. Rose still leading by two at seven under.

3:56. Koepka finds the green on 9. His 15th green in regulation on the day. Birdie chance to get to five under coming up.

3.55. Tiger finds the fairway on 8. Step one, complete.

3:52. Rose misses from 22 feet and cleans up his par. He’s still at seven under and leading four others by two.

3.50. Tiger leaves it about three rotations short on his birdie putt. Another frustrating par for him. That’s his 14th straight.

3:48. Back to 8 and Molinari. He can’t find his ball and has to go back and drop. Then makes double bogey. From a tie to second he now drops down to a tie for 12th.

3:47. Tiger finds the green on the short par-3 7th but its spins back and he has about 25 feet for birdie. Rose does the same thing and will have about 20 feet.

3:45. Spieth gets in trouble on 7 though, missing the green left and is short-sided. He’s struggled on the par-3s today, playing them in two over.

3:43. Spieth makes birdie at 6 and he’s now two under. Up-and-down day for him continues. Seven birdies and four bogeys for him today.

3:41. Tiger, Rose and Spieth all chip on and have makable birdie putts here. Tiger is first, from about 8 feet. And…misses it out to the right. Broke just a touch too much and it’s another par.

3:37. Here’s a look at Koepka’s birdie on 7.

3:33. Rose hits a wood and gets in the same bunker as Spieth.

3:32. Molinari follows up his birdie on 7 by hitting his approach on 8 short and right. He might be in the hazard, but even if he’s not will have a tough shot.

3:31. From 268 out Spieth finds the right front bunker near the green. Not a terrible spot to be in two. Tiger has 265 and grabs a 3-wood. Comes up about 30 yards short of the green but should be an easy chip. He needs a birdie here soon.

3:29. Spieth and Tiger find the fairway at the par-5 6th. Rose hooks his right but looks to be where the spectators walk, so might not be too terrible of a lie.

3:23. Easy birdie for Brooks at 7. He’s down to four under and tied for seventh. Just three behind Rose after his back-to-back birdies.

3:22. Bogey for Spieth. He’s back to one under now. Only four pars for him today as he’s been on the birdie/bogey bandwagon all day.

3:21. Molinari chips in for the second time today. This time on 7 for birdie. He’s to five under and two back.

3:20. Tiger two-putts from 29 feet. That’s another par — his 12th straight. Thirteen pars and one birdie so far for Woods. He’s still at two under and five back of Rose.

3:19. Koepka knocks to close on 7 and he might get back to back birdies here. Watch out…!

3:17. Spieth with a good break on 5. He gets to go to the drop zone since the grandstands interfere with his backswing and gets a fluffy lie… but maybe too fluffy. He shoots it over the green and is in the rough and now short-sided.

3:15 Koepka rolls in a short birdie putt on 6, and he’s to three under and tied for 11th. Three to play for the two-time defending champ.

3.10: Spieth goes way left and long on the par-3 5th hole. He’s gonna have to go over a bunker and stop it on a greens loping away from him to make par here. Probably won’t have a great lie either.

3:05. Tiger misses his eight-foot birdie putt out to the right. Can’t get anything to fall… Spieth drops his birdie putt in though and gets to two under. Rose can’t convert though and makes bogey. His lead drops to two and he’s at seven under.

3:02. Rose goes off the cliff right on the par-4 4th, but he drops and hits a pretty pitch to inside 10 feet. Would be an amazing par save. Meanwhile Tiger hits it to about 12 feet on 4 and will have that for birdie. He needs to roll one here in soon.

2:55. Aaron Wise gets in the clubhouse at five under, and he’ll surely have one of the final tee times Saturday afternoon. His first time in major contention.

2:50. Tiger putts up from the fairway and will make his par. Rose does the same. Plodding along here.

2:45. Justin Rose bounced back with a birdie on the second hole. It might be his championship until someone else goes and takes it from him. Tiger cuts it through the rough on 3 and is short of the green. Par saver coming. Francesco Molinari has very quietly moved up the leaderboard to four under.

2:35. Odd moment for Spieth and Greller today. Jordan hits a rake trying to exit a fairway bunker on no. 2. He was incensed. Probably Greller’s fault for not moving it, but not a good strike by Spieth. Has to chunk it out and then on to the green in four. Cleans up his bogey. Tiger smashes his putt through the break on 2 and will make par.

2:30. Tiger hits a phenomenal approach into the second hole. Will have about 12 feet for birdie from more than 200 yards away.

2:25. Chesson Hadley is the next leader on the scoreboard behind Rose. He’s at five under and playing the par-5 6th. Could make things interesting with a birdie there.

2:20. LEADERBOARD UPDATE!

2:15. Tiger’s birdie misses on the high side. He’ll stay at two under. Again, a quiet two under. Rose misses his par putt from seven feet. He’ll drop back to seven under.

2:10. Rose chunks his way out of the rough but hasn’t reached the green. Tiger finds the green some 20 feet from the hole.

2:05. Know what this tournament is missing? A little run from Tiger Woods. He’s two under and finds the fairway on 1.

2:00. Rose misses the fairway on no. 1. Will this guy crack?

1:55. Tiger misses his birdie chance after the layup, while both Kuchar and Hadley make bogeys. Rose just playing great, solid golf right now.

1:50. Rose splashes out to a couple feet and makes his birdie to reach eight under.  The guy is unbreakable right now. It’s early, but he’s three shots ahead of the field now.

1:45. Jordan Spieth smokes 3-wood into the 18th green after waiting for it to clear. Rolls to the back edge but he’ll have an eagle putt. Rose follows suit with a wood of his own, landing it in the front bunker.

1:35. Overall no one going super low this morning. Rose stays at seven under with a par on 17. Chesson Hadley and Matt Kuchar both at five under total after solid opening nines today.

1:30. Tiny mistakes are making life difficult for Brooks Koepka. Front bunker on 18 keeps him from getting close in three. Has to two-putt for a par on the par-5. Meanwhile, Tiger makes his two-putt easily for par on 17.

1:25. Rose flies his approach on 17 into the front bunker, which won’t be an easy up-and-down. From 210 yards, Tiger takes 5-iron and finds the green. 13 feet for birdie.

1:20. A reminder to all: this is a second-shot golf course. Brooks Koepka has hit all seven fairways on the second nine today. He’s even par.

1:15. Our reigning champ can’t quite get it all going just yet. Bogeys his eighth hole of the day to remain two under. Jordan Spieth makes birdie to join the group at two under. Justin Rose makes a five-footer for par to remain on top at seven under.

1:10. Tiger gets up and down on the tricky chip. Still two under for the week. Guy is LURKING.

1:05. On the par-4 16th, Tiger’s approach drew too much and he misses the green left, and short-sided. Will not be an easy up and down.

12:55. Par for Woods, and a nice up-and-down for par from Spieth. Then a birdie for Rose! He’s now 7-under, two clear of the field.

12:50. Woods hits a middling 9-iron onto the green, short and right but still plenty safe. Rose hits one much better and will have a great look from some six feet to get to 7 under.

12:48. Brooks Koepka is in with his first birdie of the day, moving to 3 under, which feels like a very dangerous spot to lurk.

12:45. Par for Woods. Bogey for Spieth. Par for Rose.

12:40. Well, it was looking like a tough time. But Woods just opened the face and clipped this one to about four feet. Spieth might be six inches further away after his settles just past Woods’.

12:35. Yowza. Those are a couple too-spinny wedges for Spieth and Woods, and they spin right on back off the green, where they’ll have a tough time making par.

12:30. Hitting into the wind at No. 14, Woods finds the fairway but lays up with his second, as do Spieth and Rose.

12:25. Quite the group we have here. Spieth is now 2-under, where he has joined Woods in T14. Rose still holds the solo lead, with Chesson Hadley the only guy at 5 under who’s currently on the course.

Meanwhile, here was that zippy wedge birdie a few holes back:

12:15. Woods finds the left side of the fairway, then the middle of the green, leaving himself some 20 feet up the hill. He rams that one a few feet past the hole but cleans up for par. Spieth does him one better, pouring in a birdie putt from the back fringe.

12:05. One roll short for Woods, whose ball stops dead on line for a kick-in par. Rose and Spieth each save par from off the green. Onward.

12:00. Short for Spieth at the par-3 12th, in the rough I believe. Woods hits a cracking 6-iron, finding the front right edge of the green and using the slope to get to some 20-25 feet. Really strong shot.

11:55. Woods pours it in up the hill. Three perfect shots for a birdie. Spieth pours one in on top of him, so no skin for TW. Good start for those two.

11:50. Jordan Spieth just stuck it to 8 or so feet at No. 11, and then Woods followed with a cool spinning approach shot that skipped forward well past the hole before absolutely ripping backwards, all the way back past the hole and settling some 10 feet away.

11:45. Was just going to tell you about Aaron Wise joining Justin Rose at the top of the leaderboard — but then he made double bogey at the mini par-3 7th. Back to four under.

11:40. Little left-to-righter from Woods but doesn’t give it much of a sporting bid. Leaks out low and away. Par for him, par for Rose, birdie for Spieth.

11:35. Wow. Neat shot from Woods at No. 10! Landed it short and left of the green and played the bounce to near-perfection, trickling it out inside 10 feet for birdie at his first.

11:30. All three find the fairway. We’re off!

11:25. Now Tiger Woods, Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth prepping to rip driver down No. 10. Doing some stretching around the tee right now, shaking out the morning cobwebs.

11:20. Francesco Molinari just made a penalty area par (are we not saying “hazard” anymore?) at No. 10, while Koepka’s birdie putt just slid by.

11:10. Leaderboard check! We’ve got some fellas dropping (Nate Lashley, 2-over on the day, back to 2-under for the tournament) fellas rising (Chesson Hadley, now at 4-under) and now one four-time major champion hitting driver, 9-iron into the 497-yard par-4 10th. Yowza!
