This swing speed-boosting drill is perfect for the offseason

There are few buzzwords in golf more relevant to today’s game than “swing speed.” Everybody’s got a number, and most people are trying to get more.

While there are more than a few ways to approach improving swing speed (our GOLF staffers are in the midst of a “swing speed challenge” using weighted shafts), GOLF top 100 teacher Joe Plecker has a drill you can do from the comfort of your own living room.

All you need to start boosting your speed are three alignment sticks and a couple feet of space. The drill is simple, building power in half-swings.

Here’s what you need to do:

1) Grab all three alignment sticks to ensure maximum weight and resistance.

2) Start swinging, but only half-swings! If you’re not balanced, you’ll feel yourself begin to fall over as you reach the halfway point of your swing. Two half-swings followed by a whole swing should prove to be more than enough to master the feel.

3) Repeat the drill, slowly lowering the number of alignment sticks. As you get further into the drill, relieving the weight will allow you to swing with more violence and power, all while giving you the freedom to swing freer and harder. In no time, you’ll see your speed numbers begin to spike, all while reinforcing proper balance.
