Maria Fassi first made a name for herself as a fierce competitor who waged a memorable battle with Jennifer Kupcho at the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur in 2019.
Since then, Fassi has turned pro, and has impressed with her formidable distance off the tee, averaging more than 270 yards with the driver.
In a video alongside GOLFTEC instructor Nick Clearwater, Fassi said she’s scaled her power back a bit in an effort to find more fairways, but has some useful advice for recreational players who are hoping to get the most out of their tee shots.
Maria Fassi’s 2 keys to bombing drives
1. Tee it up higher.
Fassi says her natural ball flight is a fade, but teeing it up a bit higher helps promote a draw.
“That way, when it lands, it releases a little bit more and we get a few extra yards,” she said.
2. Slow down your backswing to enable a full extension of your spine.
Fassi says she likes to think about slowing her swing down on the way back so she can reach the absolute top of her backswing, “I know that once I reach the top of my backswing, I’m going to be rushing to get back down and hit it hard,” she said.
Clearwater noted that when many recreational players try to swing harder, they speed up.
“That isn’t wrong, in and of itself,” he said. “But you’ve got to be able to turn.”
