Winter is coming. Here’s 1 thing you should do to work on your game, says Top 100 Teacher

In many parts of the country, the temperatures are edging from cool to cold, and peak golf season will soon be in the rearview mirror. But that doesn’t mean every aspect of your game has to go into hibernation mode.

In fact, there’s one thing you can do over the winter season that will pay dividends in the spring, says GOLF Top 100 Teacher Jon Tattersall, and that’s whatever it takes to increase your distance off the tee.

“Anything you can do that increases driving and iron distance, that is distance-related,” Tattersall said. “That includes going to the gym if you can, to get more strength and more mobility.”

Tattersall said that women especially can benefit from strength training, while men could use a dose of yoga.

“Ladies are generally more flexible, while men are strong but tend to lack range of motion,” Tattersall said.

Even if going to the gym is not an option, there are things you can do at home that will help in these areas.

“Pick up heavy stuff and move it around the house a bit,” he said. “Not furniture! Pick up some weights. Anything you can do that either increases how far the club’s handle is traveling, by delivering more force, that’s awesome.”

For ladies, some at-home work that Tattersall recommends is as simple as gripping the club in your hand and holding it over your head one arm at a time.

“Walk around the house with that,” he said, because you’ll gain strength quickly in your wrist, arm and shoulder, which will be hugely beneficial to your game. Hold it as long as you can, and just make the exercise an everyday thing.

“Whatever you can do in the inter to get the end of the club moving faster around your body,” Tattersall said, “the faster the ball will go.”
