How should you determine your highest-lofted wedge?

One question I get asked frequently: Which lofts should I be carrying? Since typical wedge lofts range from 44 to 64 degrees, there’s a lot of room for variety. And while there are several schools of thought on this topic, I’ve always believed that one of the best ways to decide is by using your driving distance as the determinant for your highest-loft wedge.

For example, if you hit the ball 240 yards or farther, a 60-degree loft should be your highest-loft wedge. Conversely, if you’re maxing out at 200 yards off the tee, you probably want to start at 58 or 56 degrees as your highest-loft wedge. Why? Because shorter hitters should aim to fill their bag with more clubs to hit into the greens rather than to use around them. A player who hits it farther will be getting closer to the green, so they’ll need a greater number of clubs with more loft.

A typical wedge setup for short to midrange hitters would be a 56 degree at the top end, followed by a 52 and 48. Longer hitters can go 60, 56, 52 and possibly even 48 if needed. Remember: When you don’t have as much ball speed, you don’t need as many options on the low end.
