TaylorMade Tour Preferred Wedge

Category: Wedges
Price: $130
TP grind: 52°/9°, 54°/11°, 56°/12°, 58°/10°, 60°/10°; ATV grind: 54°, 56°, 58°, 60°. All tested with KBS Tour-V wedge steel shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Lots of sole relief in the standard TP grind allows for easy-to-execute open-face shots.

PLAYABILITY: One of the top wedges—with both grinds, versatility reigns; it gives you a chance to show off; high-flying ATV is plain simple to use—it’s forgiving, smooth through the ground and effective from just about anywhere; Tour Preferred grind flies a little lower and makes hay out of high grass—the heel relief can be a lifesaver on flop shots.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Top-tier consistency; reliably clean contact makes gauging distances a snap; shots land with appropriate spin—very easy to acclimate to your game; ATV grind eliminates chunks, and does its best to get your bad swings back on track.
FEEL: A heavyweight, but well balanced and easy to get moving; the head guides you through the swing and meets the ball with a lot of mass; impact is muted and fairly soft, with a good sense of compression at the bottom; both grinds are stable through the turf.
LOOK: A subtle, professional setup; raw satin finish gives an aggressive, almost industrial vibe; it’s on the larger side but not too big; textured face looks like it’s covered in sandpaper and highlights the hitting area.

Several testers dock points for its aloof impact feel, preferring a more responsive wedge; the TP model doesn’t seem to cover misses well enough for some weekend warriors; head looks too large to a few guys.

BOTTOM LINE: TaylorMade’s pair are crowd-pleasers, with very good versatility. Our mid-handicap testers rave about the do-it-all ATV sole, although anyone this side of the Tour could put it to good use.
