How do you make one of the most popular irons on the market even cooler? How about offering them in a limited-edition black finish?

That’s exactly what TaylorMade is doing with the release of their popular P790 irons equipped with a limited-edition phantom black PVD finish along with matching black shafts, which not only increases their shelf appeal but offers a refreshing new look to an already high-performance iron set.

P790 tech refresher

For the newest iteration of the P790’s, TaylorMade developed an advanced urethane “SpeedFoam Air” that’s 69% less dense than the previous version of the material. The lighter weight design equates to an average of 3.5 grams saved in each iron head.

Thanks to the weight savings from SpeedFoam Air, TaylorMade was able to lower CG (center of gravity) to improve launch, and with that also offer the thinnest iron faces the company has ever produced.

The multi-material heads have 8620 carbon steel bodies and forged 4140 steel faces that measure 1.5mm in thickness. The face structure itself was also redesigned based on the most common impact points from thousands of golfers. According to the company, the sweet spot now better aligns with the center of the face and improves shots hit on the high-toe and low-heel.

Price and availability

TaylorMade’s phantom black PVD finished P790 irons will retail for $185 per club with steel shafts (7-piece set; $1,300), and are available now.

The Phanton P790s come with black KBS tour lite shafts TaylorMade

To compliment the black PVD finish, the stock shafts for the set are the KBS Tour lite in a black finish to give them an extremely stealthy look from club head to grip.
