How Scottie Scheffler constructed a winning equipment setup

Scheffler's incredible run earlier this season coincided with a switch to TaylorMade's Stealth Plus driver.

Building the perfect equipment setup is a lot like putting together a puzzle. Some pieces quickly fall into place, while others take more time to figure out. Scottie Scheffler can attest — it sometimes takes hours (or even days) to find the best build.

“I definitely will test stuff — I don’t love doing it at a tournament — so if anybody wants me to test, I’ll happily do it at home,” Scheffler told GOLF.com. “I want to use the best stuff. That’s why I was a free agent for so long — I liked certain club companies and what they did. But I like new gear. Gotta try and get better, and new gear helps.”

In Scheffler’s case, the payoff for time spent testing gear on the range has been immense this season. The top-ranked golfer in the world signed a multi-year equipment deal with TaylorMade this season and immediately logged back-to-back wins at the Masters and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. Those wins came on the heels of two previous trips to the winner’s circle (Phoenix and Bay Hill) prior to the deal being consummated.

It’s fair to say Scheffler hasn’t skipped a beat this season since leaving the free agent ranks for TaylorMade’s ever-growing Tour stable. The addition of TaylorMade’s Stealth Plus driver and Stealth 3-wood has played a big role in his rise to No. 1, but there’s more to Scheffler’s gear than a few clubs.

During a recent chat, Scheffler gave me an in-depth look at what makes his setup so special, his affinity for lead tape, the club he plans to donate to Augusta National after the Masters win and why he carries two 6-irons in the bag most weeks.

Twenty years of development marks the end of the titanium era. The all new 60X Carbon Twist Face is 44% lighter than an equivalent titanium face, while also being 11% larger than SIM2 and SIM2 Max drivers and nearly 20% larger than the 2020 SIM driver.
