What is THAT?! A tour pro tried out some truly wild putter creations

With one event remaining on the PGA Tour schedule before the FedEx Cup Playoffs commence, pros on the bubble are doing whatever it takes to get inside the top 70.

For some, that means making equipment changes in an attempt to extend the season. And as we saw last week at the 3M Open, the putter remains the one club pros tinker with the most when their livelihood is on the line.

Of course, putter tinkering late in the season isn’t reserved for the top rung of professional golf. On the Korn Ferry Tour, Mitchell Meissner has been known to test out different putters on occasion — even though he’s been using an Odyssey White Hot OG 7 Bird for some time now — but it’s safe to say none of them come close to the creations he came face-to-face with this week at the Utah Championship.

In a video posted on the Korn Ferry Tour’s social media accounts, Meissner had the opportunity to try out some truly one-of-kind putters on the practice green, including a Lego putter and an Anser-style blade that was almost as big as the 27-year-old pro.

Of the three putters he tried, the Lego wand is arguably the most intriguing with several smooth blocks in the middle creating a training aid device of sorts for impact consistency and feel. Miss the center of the face and you’re greeted by several bricks sporting a rough surface that’s not conducive for putting. It’s a genius creation.

A new putter training aid? Not quite. Twitter

Meissner seemed to genuinely enjoy rolling putts with the Lego creation, saying at one point it “rolls real nice.” Of course, the Lego putter isn’t USGA legal — the wheels on the heel and toe and Lego man on the topline are a nice touch, though — so don’t expect to see it coming to a Tour event anytime soon.

Brian Harman used an oversized Spider OS CB mallet to win the Open Championship. This is not the same putter. Twitter

But as a training aid? We still think it has a shot, even if it does fall apart on occasion.

As for the giant putter and mega-grip, both of those are, unfortunately, illegal as well. Meissner could use a boost in the Korn Ferry standings — he enters the week ranked 119th — but it won’t be with one of these custom creations in the bag.
