If Scotty Cameron’s limited release Phantom X 9.5 Triple Black ($750) putter looks familiar, it’s because the new shape shares some “dimensional qualities” with two putters that enjoyed banner seasons on the PGA Tour: Phantom X 5.5 and Phantom X 11.
“Each new line I create gives me the opportunity to gather feedback, make design improvements and roll out new models that incorporate these new thoughts—whether it’s a new neck, new finish or new alignment options,” Cameron said. “This Phantom X 9.5 Triple Black is one of those concepts.”
Using tour-inspired shaping as inspiration, Cameron created the high-MOI mallet around a matte tour-black finish and misted black anodized 6061 aluminum flange-sole component that gives the head a covert look.
After looking the putter over, Cameron thought the classic car term “Triple Black” fit the bill — and the Phantom X 9.5 Triple Black putter was born.
While the Phantom X 9.5 features similar shaping to the 5.5 and 11, Cameron made subtle tweaks to the overall look and feel, including the addition of three milled, translucent red sight dots on the topline, and custom engraving inspired by vintage muscle car pinstripes for alignment purposes.
From a performance perspective, the head is milled from a block of 303 stainless steel that’s carried through the face, body and wings to improve the overall stability of the head. Customizable sole weights can also be found in the heel and toe of the sole to dial in overall weight.
The 9.5 head is paired with an “arc-enhancing” small slant neck that was popularized by Justin Thomas to give the mallet a blade-like feel.
Cameron’s Phantom X 9.5 (Oct. 8 release) is offered in three lengths (33, 34 and 35 inches) with a specialty mid-round headcover and black Pistolero Plus grip with gray lettering.
