Which putter length should you use? It’s a difficult question specific to each golfer. But you should take three things into consideration to find the right length for your game.

Fully Equipped mailbag: Why blade putters have increased in weight over the last decade-plus
By: Jonathan Wall

Rory McIlroy has barely struggled with the putter over the past year, but he opted to shake things up recently to see if a different length could help clean up a few issues with his stroke. Golfers rarely consider length when the putter hits the skids, but it’s a key piece of the equation when it comes to producing a consistent, repeatable stroke.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you decide to follow Rory’s lead.

1. Small change, big difference

McIlroy found that going to a longer length (35 inches) helped get his shoulders and right elbow in a better position during the stroke. Sometimes all it takes is altering the length (not the head) to get it right. Give it a try if you’re struggling.

2. Weighting issue

It’s important to note that shortening or lengthening the putter will alter swingweight, which could affect how it feels in your hands. Adjustable heel-toe sole weights can help in this situation.

3. So many choices

If you don’t feel comfortable committing to a set putter length, consider something with an adjustable-length shaft. PING’s Sigma 2 can go from 32 to 36 inches (¼-inch increments) with the twist of a wrench.
