Dustin Johnson’s rotating putter carousel has been well-documented throughout his PGA Tour career. There have been numerous blades, mallets and even blades that perform like mallets. Throw in the flatsticks that never made the cut — DJ has been known to “test” upwards of five in a given week — and one could argue the two-time major winner deserves serious consideration for the “King of Putter Changes” title. (We’re assuming the title is a real thing.)
Despite all the changes Johnson’s made over the years, one putter has retained a spot in the rotation: TaylorMade’s Spider Itsy Bitsy Limited.
The mallet rode shotgun during a two-year stretch (2016-2018) where Johnson won 10 times and reached the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in his career. In total, the putter has played a part in 13 of his 24 PGA Tour titles, including the 2020 Masters.
To celebrate the anniversary of Johnson’s win at Augusta National, TaylorMade announced the release of a special Johnson-inspired Spider Limited that’s built to the exact same specifications as his trusty mallet.
“Growing up in South Carolina, winning in Augusta was my dream,” Johnson said. “When that dream finally came true last fall, I was speechless. The win was special for many reasons, as is the putter that helped me get the job done.”
The commemorative Spider putter features a clean black crown — Johnson tried out different sightlines over his career but always returned to the clean look — short slant hosel, black chromed stepped steel shaft, gray Surlyn PureRoll insert and a CounterCore SuperStroke PistolGT 1.0 grip. Two 9-gram were also placed in the heel and toe for stability purposes.
Subtle green accents can be found on the SuperStroke grip and Spider badge positioned in the center of the sole — a nod to the year’s first major. The putter comes in a special presentation box and is protected by the same “2020 Season’s Tradition” putter Johnson used the week of his win. A signed letter from Johnson can be found inside the box as well.
The limited-edition Spider putter will be available April 9 on TaylorMade’s official website and retails for $500.
