As expected, TaylorMade’s P7MB isn’t the only new iron the equipment manufacturer has in the pipeline. With launch season just around the corner, a Tour-only P7MC iron appeared in Rasmus Hojgaard’s bag at the British Masters that all but confirmed a full-blown iron line for better players is on the horizon.
TaylorMade has yet to comment on the design, but the profile is already drawing comparisons to a classic iron from the past: TP Forged.
Released in the mid and late 2000s in North America and Japan, the forged cavity-back version featured a no-nonsense look with a muscle pad that dipped into the back cavity. It’s the shaping of the P7MC muscle pad, in particular, that had some on social media pulling up old images of TP Forged to do side-by-side comparisons.
It’s not uncommon for manufacturers to blend new-age tech with successful designs from the past. TaylorMade’s current SIM fairway woods incorporate the popular V Steel sole shape that was initially introduced more than a decade ago; it would appear P7MC very well could be taking a similar design route.
At the moment, Hojgaard looks to be the only professional with the cavity-back irons in the bag. But if Rory McIlroy’s recent acceptance of the P7MB is any indication, it likely won’t be long before we see a high-profile TaylorMade staffer break in the P7MC.
