How do you make a cool, high-performance iron even cooler? How about offering it in a limited-edition black finish?

TaylorMade is doing exactly that with the release of their P770 irons equipped with a limited-edition “Phantom Black” PVD finish along with matching black KBS Tour shafts, which not only increases their golf bag appeal but offers a new look to an already Tour-quality iron set.

P770 Tech Refresher

For the newest iteration of the P770s, TaylorMade used the same advanced urethane “SpeedFoam Air” from the popular P790s that’s 69 percent less dense than the previous version of the material.

The lighter-weight design equates to an average of 3.5 grams saved in each iron head, which allows more tungsten to be used in conjunction with the FLTD (flighted) CoG design to make them more forgiving. The multi-material heads have 8620 carbon steel bodies and forged 4140 steel faces that measure 1.5mm in thickness.

For additional help, the P770 continues with TaylorMade’s “speed pocket” on the sole to keep spin down and ball speed up for shots missed low on the face. And finally, to complement the black PVD finish, the stock shaft option for the set is the KBS Tour in a black finish to give them a stealthy look from club head to grip.

Price and availability

TaylorMade’s Phantom Black PVD P770 irons will be offered with steel (7-piece set; $1,400) or graphite (7-piece set; $1,500) shafts.
