Our take: For our GOLF testers, the Ping i500 looks were deceiving but in the best way possible. While the irons have blade-style looks that might intimidate a mid- to high-handicapper, they’re actually made for towering trajectories and big distance. “These blew me away,” one tester said. “As a low-ball hitter, these helped me out so much. They just fly into the sky. That’ll certainly come in handy on a lot of approach shots.”

The Ping i500 Irons feature a forged, variable-thickness, C300 maraging steel face insert. The C300 insert produces metalwood-like face flexing, which increases ball speed, launches high and delivers massive distance. The i500’s explosive distance is wrapped in a compact head, that has minimal offset and a traditional muscle-back look. The muscle-back geometry helps in hinging the face, increasing ball speed, trajectory and distance.

The details: Tucked inside what initially seems like a blade iron, the i500 heads are hollow-bodied to capitalize on face flexing for distance and height. The 17-4 stainless-steel body couples with the C300 maraging steel face to act like mini-trampolines. Also, the geometry of the sole helps shift weight lower in the head, thus helping the ball fly higher.
