Justin Thomas played these irons in the ’round of his life’ at the Players Championship

Welcome to Spotted on Tour, where we’ll highlight buzzy apparel, gear, gadgets and more that caught our eye over the weekend. Better yet, we’ll help you get your hands on your own.

Justin Thomas made no bones about it in his post-round presser on Sunday: his final-round performance at the Players Championship was rarified air, even for a major champion like himself.

“I fought so hard today, I stayed really patient,” he said. “[It was] probably one of the best rounds of my life tee to green. I had total control of the ball and was hitting a lot of good putts, I just wasn’t holing anything, but I stayed patient.”

The result of Thomas’ patience? His first Players Championship victory and a $2.7 million winner’s check. While the result speaks for itself, the stats are just as clear: JT’s performance — both on Sunday and throughout the week at TPC Sawgrass — came at the intersection of a unique blend of focus and execution.

Take, for example, Thomas’ 17 of 18 greens in regulation on Sunday or the line on his 72nd tee shot, which managed to catch a three-foot window of safety away from the water lurking inches to the left. Or, if you’re into analytics, look at his strokes gained tally — in particular in the tee-to-green category, which ranked first in the field by four whole strokes.

The numbers paint a broader picture of Thomas’ performance, and more clairvoyantly, his iron play. Thomas was the best iron player in the field this weekend courtesy of his Titleist 620 MB irons, proving yet again that it’s just as nice to hit it straight as it is to hit it long.

The one-piece forged musclebacks give the appearance golfers have come to expect from a traditional blade iron, and carry the performance tradition set forth by Titleist irons. They were a favorite during GOLF’s 2021 ClubTest player testing, earning high marks for consistency, workability and forgiveness.

A true player’s iron, the 620 MBs feature progressive blade lengths and thinner toplines to maximize workability and control — two tenets that were on full display during JT’s Saturday 64, when he nearly holed out a pair of approaches from the fairway. While a tour-refined MB sole creates smoother turf interaction and more consistent overall performance.
