Almost 10 months after Adam Scott debuted a custom set of Miura irons at the Memorial Tournament, the former Masters champion was spotted at the Players Championship with a fresh set of Miura blades that featured a couple of minor cosmetic modifications.
The most obvious addition is a red “Hanko” stamp on the back of each head — better known as Katsuhiro Miura’s personal stamp of approval when an iron is crafted to his exacting specifications. (For the true gearheads, it’s important to point out that the KM-700 is the only current retail iron offering to feature the Hanko stamp.)
The Miura logo can also be found on the sole. It’s unclear if Scott plans to use the irons this week at TPC Sawgrass, but he had both sets in tow on Tuesday afternoon.
Scott remains an equipment free agent after parting ways with Titleist on the club side in 2022. The freedom to test eventually led him to connect with Miura after seeing a set of the limited-edition Nicklaus x Miura irons. (Nicklaus Companies and Miura are affiliates of GOLF.com’s parent company, 8AM Golf.)
The extra offset on the Nicklaus irons appealed to Scott, and the two sides discussed the possibility of working together on a custom set built to the Aussie’s preferences.
The toe shaping and flat sole on Scott’s current Miura irons were designed after the Nicklaus x Miura, but the overall blade length was extended and the par area refined to fit Scott’s eye at address. (The blade length on Scott’s original Miura set and his old Titleist 680 Forged are identical.)
The flat sole was also adjusted ever-so-slightly to match up to the firmer turf conditions Scott is used to seeing most weeks on the PGA Tour.
Scott’s camp wouldn’t comment on whether the irons featured any fresh alterations beyond the stamping, but it’s fair to say they look very similar to his gamer set at first glance.
Even if they don’t make the cut this week, expect the new sticks to be broken in at some point in the not-too-distant future.
