The putter has plagued Dustin Johnson for large stretches of his career. On Sunday, it was the club that helped him secure the season-long FedEx Cup title at the Tour Championship. For much of the 2019-20 season, Johnson rotated between putters, never settling on one particular wand for very long — even when he won the Travelers Championship with a TaylorMade Truss.
Then Johnson returned to “old faithful” prior to the PGA Championship, and something clicked. Old faithful is better known as Johnson’s TaylorMade Spider Tour Itsy Bitsy Limited, the same putter he used to ascend to the top spot in the World Golf Ranking in 2017.
With Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas nipping at Johnson’s heels, the world No. 1 buried a number of key par putts down the stretch, including a 21-footer on the 13th, to keep the pursuers at bay.
In addition to the putter, Johnson retained the same TaylorMade setup he used to win the Northern Trust. The setup features a TaylorMade SIM Max 7-wood that Johnson inserted during the PGA Championship to combat the rough at Harding Park. Instead of reverting back to his old set makeup (5-wood), Johnson stuck with the high-lofted fairway wood during the playoffs.
Here’s a complete look at Johnson’s entire TaylorMade setup.
