ClubTest First Look: Miura’s new wear-proof black finish for irons and wedges

Irons and wedges with a black finish have an undeniable bag appeal. They look good. The problem is, though, that typical black finishes wear out rather quickly, especially on the face and sole where they get the most usage.

Miura Golf, however, has developed a new black finish using a technique called “QPQ,” or quench-polish-quench. This specialized process helps mitigate wear and corrosion, keeping those black finishes looking clean and stealthy, even for golfers who play and practice frequently.

Confident in the QPQ process, Miura is introducing the new black finish on a number of its current iron and wedge offerings. Now, the MB-101, TC-201, CB-301 and MC-501 irons, as well as the Tour wedges, Tour HB (High Bounce) wedges and K-Grind 2.0 wedges will all be available with the improved black finish.

While some golfers may be concerned that the black finish may affect that classic, buttery Miura feel, there’s nothing to worry about. The company assures that the black finish has no impact on performance or feel. It’s simply aesthetic.

Below, we break down the prices of each offering and provide a quick refresher on the different head models.

Miura MB-101

Forged from S20C soft carbon steel, Miura’s MB-101 irons have a blade profile made for better players. They have thin toplines, minimal offset, and the soles are designed to move easily through the turf. The black versions of the irons will sell for $350 per head.

Miura TC-201

The TC-201 irons are designed to provide golfers the look of a blade, but with a touch of added forgiveness. Short irons in the progressive set are built for a low and controlled trajectory, while the long irons are designed for added height and forgiveness. The black versions of the TC-201 irons will sell for $380 per club.

Miura CB-301

Miura says the CB-301 irons are the longest forged cavity-back irons in the company’s history. Now, they come in black, and will sell for $350 apiece.

Miura MC-501

Miura’s MC-501 irons have a muscle-cavity design bringing golfers a mix between blade looks and cavity-back forgiveness. They come with a special Y-grind, which was created by Yoshitaka Miura. The black versions of the MC-501 irons will sell for $350 per club.

Miura Tour wedges

Miura’s Tour Wedge is made from S20C soft carbon steel, and the face and grooves are milled for greater precision. Now, the spin-inducing wedges come in a black finish that will sell for $365 per wedge.

Miura Tour HB wedges

If you tend to catch wedge shots a bit chunky or a bit thin, maybe it’s time to try something with more bounce. Miura’s HB (high bounce) wedges have wider soles with more bounce to help golfers get more forgiveness from their wedge. The HB Wedge is now available in a black finish, and will sell for $365 each.

Miura K-Grind 2.0 wedges

Miura’s K-Grind 2.0 wedges have special “knuckles,” or a fluted sole, to help reduce twisting at impact from various lies. The K-Grind 2.0 also has a bit more added bounce for better forgiveness. The black versions of the wedges will sell for $365 each.
