It was a cool and rainy week during the 2007 Presidents Cup in Montreal — I know this because I was there for three days and stood behind the 1st tee for hours to watch the initial round of matches many years ago.

Beyond the cool weather, and watching Woody Austin fall into the water to earn the nickname Aquaman, one of the most memorable moments of that event was watching the now International Team captain Mike Weir beat Tiger Woods during Sunday singles to earn a point.

From an equipment perspective, Mike has always been a fascinating character because he was one of the few left-handed players on TaylorMade’s staff at the time, and that gave him the opportunity to put some very unique gear in the bag — specifically his irons.

Mike had a particular look that he preferred for his irons which skewed towards very old school shaping with pronounced offset and a square look from address. Before signing with TaylorMade he played Hogan irons in the late ’90s, but all through his career with TaylorMade he played extremely custom irons that would get branded with the newest series badges once it was time to replace a set.

One of the only other players to ever receive this type of treatment when it came to gear out of the tour was Tiger who is now a TaylorMade staffer and conveniently enough plays custom P7TW blades — crazy world right?
