Callaway MD3 Milled Wedge Review: ClubTest 2016

May 26, 2016

PRICE: $130
WE TESTED: “W” grind: 56°/12°, 58°/11°; “C” grind: 56°/10°, 58°/8°; “S” grind: 56°/10°, 58°/9°. All with True Temper Dynamic Gold wedge-flex steel shafts
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Holes drilled in back raise the CG and ramp up spin.

LOOK: Testers like the matte-black finish, and the neon portholes add flash; lots of real estate on the toe helps settle the nerves on open-face shots.
FEEL: A familiar, slightly compressed thump; filters shock better than most, but impact doesn’t get lost on the way up.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Might offer the best spin control — lets you rev up RPMs or throttle back for pitches that release; covers full-swing misses better than most.
PLAYABILITY: One of the best — dominant through rough and scythes through bunkers; a wizard on the short-side, lay it flat for flops or to zip one to a stop.

No magic bullet for a few high-handicappers; some guys don’t care for the neon accents; know what you need to buy off the rack — otherwise, price in the cost of a fitting to find the right grind.

BOTTOM LINE: One of the best — dials in distances, with a high-end fit and finish. Better golfers who like to play with spin will have the most fun.
