How Callaway is helping front-line healthcare workers combat the coronavirus

Finally, there’s optimism in the world of golf. Courses across the United States are opening up, professional golfers are set to tee it up for television audiences beginning this weekend, and the PGA Tour has its sights set on a return to action in a few weeks’ time. The good vibes even extend all the way into the gear industry, where club manufacturers aren’t only celebrating golf’s glorious return, they’re turning the moment into an engine for good.

Callaway Golf became the latest company to turn optimism into charity Tuesday. The Carlsbad, Calif.-based club manufacturer announced a $100,000 donation toward MedShare, a humanitarian aid organization dedicated to providing front-line healthcare workers with personal protective equipment (or PPE) and other forms of medical supplies.

Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States in March, MedShare has provided healthcare workers in 140 hospitals with more than 1.3 million units of PPE. But even as PPE has become more widely available, hospitals throughout the U.S. continue to struggle to meet the demand needed to fight the virus. Callaway’s donation will allow MedShare to continue aiding hospitals to meet their need.

“We appreciate Callaway Golf’s generous support of our COVID-19 relief efforts,” Charles Redding, CEO and president of MedShare said in a statement. “The impact of COVID-19 on our communities and our health care professionals has been significant. This donation will further enhance our efforts to get personal protective equipment and other critical supplies to the health care professionals who need it the most.”

Callaway President and CEO Chip Brewer is one of a host of golf executives forgoing salary during the crisis. For Brewer and others, the hope is that Callway’s donation will spur a chain reaction.

“We are proud to support MedShare and their ongoing relief efforts with this donation,” Brewer said. “We appreciate the incredible work that their organization is doing, and we want to thank all of the healthcare professionals who are working bravely, tirelessly and selflessly to help keep us safe.”
