Course Overview

Venue for five U.S. Opens since 1986, most recently in 2018, this is William Flynn’s design masterpiece. Apart from being handed a magnificently spacious parcel of land upon which to work, Flynn was given something else nearly as valuable: time. Work started in 1928 and the course didn’t open until 1931. True, the Great Depression began during construction but the grace with which the holes flow across the property is a tribute to the hands-on, slow-build process. (Photo: Getty Images)

3 things to know

  • Hole everyone talks about

No. 7, par-3, 189 yards: One of America’s great Redan greens — which works diagonally away from golfers from front-right to back-left — can leave you in some wretched spots. If you hit only one solid iron shot all day, save it for this tee.
  • Best non-golf amenity

The old-timey locker room is a throwback to another era. Really, the whole clubhouse is. Leave time to read some of the framed correspondences on the walls, including a gracious thank-you note that Raymond Floyd sent to the club president in the wake of Floyd’s win at the 1986 U.S. Open.
  • Insider tip

On a hot day, pop into the clubhouse at the turn and grab yourself a South Side, a simple and refreshing gin-based drink infused with mint and lemon.
