Course Overview

East of Edinburgh sits this fabled links. Among its many highlights is the 15th hole, the much-copied Redan, a par-3 played to an elevated, diagonal green. In the memorability department, however, 15 takes a backseat to the par-4 13th, The Pit, whose green sits directly behind a low stone wall. Less discussed but just as exciting is its 16th green, with its left and right plateaus separated by a deep channel. Our panel clearly appreciates the variety of obstacles that the golfer must overcome as the course has steadily climbed the World ranking since its initial appearance in 2007. 3 things to know

  • Hole everyone talks about

No. 13, par-4, 387 yards. Dubbed “The Pit,” the 13th is one of the most unique golf holes in the world. It plays along the coast and its green is tucked behind a stone wall.
  • Best non-golf amenity

The beach! Seriously, North Berwick West Beach has stellar views of the island of Craigleith and the Bass Rock. It’s worth a stroll.
  • Insider tip

Bring the kids … sorta. The Wee Course at North Berwick was the original home of the North Berwick Ladies Club, and now costs just £5 a day. Adults are allowed to play, only under one condition: they have to play with a junior.
